ARK’s Flat proSpoon™ takes the thoughtful design of the original proSpoon™ and makes the spoon bowl very thin and shallow.

Why does that matter?

Removing food from a spoon requires the lips to close around the spoon and clear the food from the bowl. For individuals with limited lip control, a deeper spoon can make this more difficult.

The Flat proSpoon provides an almost-flat presentation, reducing the depth of the bowl and giving food less distance to travel before it can be removed from the spoon.

Why we love it

Sometimes it’s the depth of the spoon – not the food – that makes the task harder.

We often pay attention to what is on the spoon, but the shape and depth of the spoon itself can change the demands of feeding.

A deep spoon requires more lip movement to successfully remove the food. The Flat proSpoon’s very shallow bowl can make that task more manageable for individuals who have difficulty clearing food from a traditional spoon.

We also like that this version is smooth and untextured.

Unlike ARK’s Flat Textured Spoons, which can be used when additional tactile input is part of the goal, the Flat proSpoon keeps things simple when you’re looking for a shallow spoon presentation without added oral texture.

Why spoon depth matters

It can be easy to assume that all spoons do essentially the same job – but spoon dimensions can make a meaningful difference.

To remove food from a typical spoon, the lips need to close around the spoon and clear food from within the bowl.

If the bowl is particularly deep, there’s simply more work involved.

The Flat proSpoon has a very thin bowl profile, reducing that depth while still providing enough of a spoon surface to hold and present food.

A feeding therapist’s note

I pay a lot of attention to spoon shape when I’m assessing feeding.

If someone consistently leaves food behind on the spoon, needs the feeder to scrape the spoon against their upper lip or finds it difficult to remove a mouthful, I don’t just look at their oral skills – I also look at the utensil we’re asking them to use.

Sometimes changing the spoon changes the demands of the task.

That’s what I like about the Flat proSpoon. Its very shallow profile means there isn’t a deep bowl of food to clear.

And because this version is smooth, it’s a good option when I want the benefits of a flatter spoon without introducing additional texture at the same time.

As always, the spoon should be selected for the individual rather than assuming one design is best for everyone.
