About this product
ARK Z-Vibe® Vibratory Oral Motor Tool
One handle, gentle vibration and a huge range of possibilities for targeted oral sensory and feeding therapy.
The ARK Z-Vibe® is a specialised vibratory therapy tool used by speech pathologists, occupational therapists and other appropriately trained professionals to provide tactile input and targeted cues to the lips, tongue, cheeks and jaw.
Slim and lightweight, the Z-Vibe produces gentle vibration through the handle and whichever interchangeable tip is attached.
It comes ready to use with ARK’s Probe Tip, which can be used to provide targeted tactile input within and around the mouth. With more than 35 compatible tip attachments available – from spoons and brushes to bite-and-chew and writing attachments = the same Z-Vibe handle can be adapted for a wide range of individual therapy goals.
This is one of those tools where how it’s used matters just as much as the tool itself.
Why we love it
It’s incredibly versatile – but importantly, it can also be very targeted.
The Z-Vibe isn’t simply about adding vibration.
A therapist can use a particular tip, position and movement to provide tactile information exactly where it’s wanted.
For example, it might be used to help someone notice a particular part of their tongue, provide tactile information around the lips before spoon presentation, explore different sensations within the mouth, or provide physical cues as part of a specific feeding or oral motor activity.
Change the attachment and the same handle can become a textured spoon, oral brush, bite-and-chew tool or even a vibrating pencil.
That versatility is what makes the Z-Vibe such a well-known tool in many therapy kits.

What does the Z-Vibe actually do?
At its simplest, the Z-Vibe provides gentle vibration and tactile input.
A therapist can use that sensory information in different ways depending on the individual and the goal.
Rather than simply telling someone “move your tongue here”, for example, the therapist may use an appropriate Z-Vibe tip to provide a tactile cue at the location they want the person to notice.
For someone exploring oral sensation, different tips can also provide variations in texture, shape, firmness and vibration.
The important distinction is that the Z-Vibe provides the input or cue. What someone does with that information – and whether it’s useful – will vary from person to person.
One handle, lots of possibilities
One of the Z-Vibe’s biggest advantages is its range of interchangeable attachments.
With compatible ARK tips, therapists can adapt the Z-Vibe for different activities.
Probe and oral motor tips
For targeted tactile input and therapist-directed oral motor activities.
Spoon tips
Combine spoon presentation with vibration and/or additional texture during appropriately selected feeding activities.
Brush and oral-care tips
Can be used for tactile exploration around the gums, teeth and mouth, or as part of therapist-guided oral-care programs.
Bite and Chew / Bite Tube tips
Provide a surface for guided biting and chewing activities. Hollow Bite Tube options can also be used with small amounts of purée when clinically appropriate.
Writing tips
Compatible pen, pencil and crayon attachments transform the Z-Vibe into ARK’s Tran-Quill® system, adding vibration and sensory feedback during writing activities.
With more than 35 compatible tip options available, the Z-Vibe can be configured according to the individual’s needs rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
What about oral sensitivity?
You’ll sometimes see vibration described as something that “desensitises” the mouth.
We prefer to be a little more thoughtful about it.
Some individuals actively seek and enjoy vibration. Others may initially find it intense or unpleasant.
The Z-Vibe can be used as part of graded oral sensory exploration when this has been identified as appropriate, but the aim isn’t to simply keep applying sensation until someone tolerates it.
Their response matters.
Start where the individual is comfortable, observe their cues and adjust the type, location and intensity of input accordingly.
A feeding therapist’s note
The Z-Vibe has been around in therapy circles for a long time and I’ve used it in many different ways over the years.
What I like about it is the ability to be specific.
If I want someone to notice a particular part of their tongue, I can provide a tactile cue there. If I’m exploring how someone responds to different oral sensations, I can change the attachment, texture or location. If I’m working on a particular biting or feeding activity, I can choose a tip designed for that purpose.
But I don’t use vibration simply because someone has a feeding difficulty.
And I don’t assume that because one person finds vibration enjoyable or settling, another person will too.
Sensory responses are incredibly individual.
For me, the Z-Vibe is most useful when I can answer two questions: What am I trying to help this person notice or do, as well as, why have I chosen vibration or tactile input to help me get there?
That’s when it becomes a purposeful therapy tool rather than just something that vibrates.

Important
The Z-Vibe® is a therapeutic tool, not a toy.
It is intended for use by an appropriately qualified professional or by a caregiver who has been trained by the individual’s therapist.
The Z-Vibe contains small components, including a battery, which may present a choking hazard. Direct adult supervision is required at all times.
Oral motor and sensory activities should be selected according to the individual’s specific needs. Vibration should not automatically be assumed to improve feeding, speech, oral tone, sensory regulation or food acceptance.
For individuals with dysphagia, aspiration risk or other swallowing difficulties, use feeding-related attachments and activities only according to recommendations from the treating speech pathologist or swallowing team.
