About this product

Pigeon SofTouch™ Training Straw 6m+

A familiar first step towards straw drinking, with a soft, rounded tip and clever gravity ball straw for little learners.

The Pigeon SofTouch™ Training Straw 6m+ is designed to help babies explore a new way of drinking while keeping some of the familiar features of their SofTouch™ bottle.

With a rounded, teat-like tip and Y-cut opening, it offers a different introduction to straw drinking from a traditional open-ended straw. The shape and feel may be familiar to babies who have been using SofTouch™ teats, while giving them opportunities to practise a new drinking pattern.

It also includes a gravity ball straw, which moves with the liquid inside the bottle so babies can drink from different angles as they learn to hold and move their bottle.

Designed for approximately 6 months+, the training straw top fits Pigeon SofTouch™ 240mL bottles.

Why we love it

Moving from a teat to a straw can be quite a change.

A baby who is comfortable drinking from a bottle suddenly needs to explore a different mouth position, different suction demands and a new way of managing liquid.

We like that Pigeon’s 6m+ Training Straw doesn’t make that change feel quite so dramatic.

The rounded silicone tip offers a familiar shape, while the Y-cut opening introduces a different drinking experience.

The gravity ball is another thoughtful feature, particularly for babies who are beginning to take a more active role in holding and positioning their own bottle.

Rather than needing to keep the bottle at one particular angle, the weighted straw can follow the liquid as the bottle moves.

Great for

  • Babies from approximately 6 months+ who are ready to explore straw drinking
  • Early straw-drinking experiences
  • Transitioning from a SofTouch™ teat towards a straw
  • Babies who prefer a familiar, rounded drinking tip
  • Practising lip closure around a drinking tip
  • Exploring suction and a new drinking pattern
  • Babies beginning to hold and position their own bottle
  • Drinking from different bottle angles
  • Families already using Pigeon SofTouch™ 240mL bottles
  • Everyday opportunities to practise drinking during meals and snacks

A familiar shape for a new skill

The 6m+ Training Straw features a round tip with a Y-cut opening.

Its shape is designed to feel similar to a SofTouch™ teat, providing a familiar point of contact for babies as they begin exploring straw drinking.

This can be useful because babies don’t have to manage every part of the new drinking experience at once.

They’re still learning to position their lips, generate suction and respond when liquid arrives.

The rounded tip doesn’t guarantee a particular lip position or feeding pattern, but it offers another option for babies who are beginning this transition.

What does the gravity ball do?

The included gravity ball straw is designed to follow the liquid as the bottle changes position.

That means babies can access liquid from a range of angles, rather than needing to hold the bottle in one exact position.

This can be particularly practical as babies become more interested in holding their own bottle and experimenting with how to move it.

The gravity ball is enclosed within a fully sealed, one-piece silicone straw design, so it cannot detach from the straw during normal use. This also reduces the number of hidden joins where residue may collect.

The set includes the straw connector and gravity ball attachment.

How is it different from the 12m+ version?

Pigeon’s two training straw stages have different designs.

6m+ Training Straw

  • Rounded, teat-like tip
  • Y-cut opening
  • Gravity ball straw for multi-angled drinking
  • Compatible with SofTouch™ 240mL bottles only
  • Designed as an earlier introduction to straw drinking

12m+ Training Straw

  • Flatter drinking tip
  • X-cut opening with higher flow
  • Compatible with SofTouch™ 240mL and 330mL bottles
  • Designed for children ready to manage a different tip shape and higher flow

These aren’t stages that every child must move through at a particular age. The best choice depends on how comfortably your child manages the drinking experience.

A feeding therapist’s note

One of the things I find interesting about early straw drinking is how much babies have to figure out.

They’re learning what happens when they close their lips around a drinking tip, how to generate suction and how to manage liquid when it reaches their mouth.

For some babies, a more familiar tip shape can be a useful way to introduce that change.

What I particularly like about this Pigeon straw is the combination of the rounded tip and gravity ball. It gives babies an opportunity to explore a different drinking pattern while also allowing more freedom in how they hold the bottle.

But I wouldn’t assume that a baby needs to start with this type of straw before trying a regular straw or that they should automatically move to the 12m+ version on their first birthday.

Some babies learn well with a simple open straw. Others benefit from a different design or more assistance.

As always, I want to watch how the baby manages the liquid, rather than focusing only on which drinking stage they’re using.

Important

The 6m+ age recommendation is a guide. Introduce straw drinking when your baby is developmentally ready and able to manage the liquid flow comfortably.

Always supervise babies and young children while drinking. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for assembly, cleaning and inspection, and replace any damaged or worn components.

If your baby regularly coughs, chokes or splutters when drinking, appears distressed, or has known or suspected swallowing difficulties, seek advice from an appropriately qualified health professional.

For babies with dysphagia, aspiration concerns, respiratory compromise or prescribed thickened fluids, the choice of drinking system and liquid consistency should follow the recommendations of their treating speech pathologist or swallowing team.
