A toothbrush that fits over your finger

Unlike a traditional toothbrush with a long handle, the Pigeon Finger Toothbrush fits directly over an adult’s finger.

This allows the caregiver to guide gentle movements around the mouth while maintaining close control over the brush’s position.

A little extra care for the tongue

The brush also includes a built-in tongue-cleaning surface, designed to help gently remove visible milk residue when appropriate.

Not every white coating on a baby’s tongue needs to be scrubbed away and a persistent coating may have causes other than milk residue.

Tongue cleaning should always be gentle, without scraping or pushing the brush towards the back of the mouth.

A soft safety shield

The finger brush includes a soft protective shield designed to help limit how far it can enter the mouth.

This is a useful additional feature during caregiver-led oral care, particularly when working in such a small space.

The shield does not eliminate the risk of gagging, injury or choking, so the brush should always be used carefully and under direct adult control.

A feeding therapist’s note

One thing I often talk about with families is that oral care is a sensory experience as well as a hygiene routine.

For a baby, having something touch their lips, gums, tongue or teeth can feel quite unfamiliar.

I like that a finger brush gives the adult close control over the movement, while the soft silicone provides a gentle way to introduce those sensations.

I’d keep the experience short and responsive.

Let your baby see you coming. Touch around their lips first if that’s helpful. Watch their cues and don’t feel you need to clean every part of the mouth in one go.

I also think it’s important to distinguish between getting familiar with oral care and thoroughly cleaning teeth.

A finger brush can be a useful early tool, but once teeth appear or your little one can cope with the input, families should follow age-appropriate dental guidance for effective brushing and fluoride toothpaste.

Important

For adult use when cleaning a baby’s mouth. Do not leave the finger brush with a baby or allow it to be used without direct caregiver control.

The safety shield helps limit insertion depth but does not prevent all gagging, choking or injury risks.

Always inspect the brush before use and discontinue use if the silicone is torn, damaged or loose. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and storage instructions.

Avoid forceful brushing, scraping the tongue or inserting the brush deeply into the mouth.

Once the first tooth appears, follow age-appropriate dental guidance for effective toothbrushing. This generally means using a small, silicone or soft-bristled toothbrush, with toothpaste use guided by the child’s age, individual dental needs and advice from their dental health professional.

If a white coating on the tongue persists, cannot be gently wiped away or is accompanied by discomfort or feeding difficulties, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
