A chew that’s hiding in plain sight

The name Krypto-Bite® comes from kryptos, meaning hidden, concealed or secret – and that’s exactly the idea.

Rather than carrying a separate chew tool, the Krypto-Bite fits onto the end of a standard pencil or pen and looks like a fun topper.

That makes it a particularly practical option for someone who wants access to oral sensory input while writing but prefers something that doesn’t stand out.

An added bit of weight

The Krypto-Bite isn’t only useful for chewing.

Adding the topper also adds extra weight, changing the sensory feedback the writer receives through their hand.

Its weight can also help the pencil or pen sit into the web space between the thumb and index finger.

This may be a useful feature for some individuals, but – as with any sensory tool – more weight isn’t automatically better. Pencil weight and writing tools should be chosen according to the individual’s preferences and needs.

Choose your toughness

ARK offers the Krypto-Bite® Pencil Topper in three colour-coded toughness levels.

Standard – Softest
The softest and chewiest option. Best suited to mild chewers who don’t typically damage other chewable items.

Medium Firm
A firmer middle option with plenty of chewability, designed for moderate chewers.

Very Firm
The most rigid and resistant option. It still has some chewability but provides significantly more resistance and is generally the longest-lasting choice for avid chewers.

No chew tool is indestructible, so whichever level you choose, inspect it regularly and replace it when it shows signs of damage or significant wear.

A therapist’s note

If someone repeatedly chews the end of their pencil, my first thought isn’t necessarily “How do we stop this?”

I’m interested in what they’re getting from it.

For some people, chewing provides oral sensory input that they actively seek while concentrating, listening or working with their hands.

A pencil topper is a wonderfully practical option because it puts an appropriate chewing surface exactly where that behaviour is already happening.

I also like that it’s discreet. Particularly as children get older or for adults, they may be much more willing to use a sensory tool if it blends naturally into their everyday environment.

And while chewing is sometimes described as universally “calming” or “regulating”, I prefer not to make that assumption. Sensory responses are individual. What we can say is that the Krypto-Bite provides accessible oral sensory input for someone who finds chewing useful or satisfying.
