Each of its five arms has a different texture – smooth, striated, treaded, ribbed and bumpy – giving the mouth a range of tactile experiences to explore.

Even more cleverly, the textures gradually increase in intensity as you move around the SolaBite, starting with the smoothest arm for the least tactile input and progressing through to the bumpy arm for the most.

With three toughness levels to choose from, you can select both the type of sensory input and amount of chewing resistance that best suits the individual.

Five textures to explore

Move around the SolaBite and the texture gradually becomes more pronounced:

Smooth – the least textured surface for gentler sensory input

Striated – subtle lines introduce a little more texture

Treaded – a more defined patterned surface

Ribbed – raised ridges provide stronger tactile feedback

Bumpy – the most textured arm for maximum tactile input

Having all five on one chew allows the individual to explore, compare and choose the texture that feels best to them.

Choose your toughness

Standard – Softest
The softest and easiest option to compress. Recommended for mild chewing or individuals who need less resistance.

Medium Firm – More resistance
Firmer than Standard while still retaining some chewiness. A good middle option for individuals who prefer greater resistance.

Very Firm – Most resistance
The toughest option, providing the greatest resistance and feedback to the jaw.

A feeding therapist’s note

One thing I’ve learnt from working with sensory preferences is that texture can really matter.

Someone may happily chew one surface and show very little interest in another. That’s one of the reasons I like the SolaBite – it gives us five different tactile experiences without having to swap between five different tools.

I also like that the textures increase in intensity. We can start with the smooth end of the spectrum and explore progressively stronger textures, or simply let the individual show us what they prefer.

And remember, more texture isn’t necessarily better. Sensory preferences are individual. For some people, the bumpy arm might be exactly what they’re looking for, someone else may keep returning to the smoother options.

Following those preferences can tell us a lot.

No chew tool is indestructible. How quickly a chew wears will vary considerably depending on the frequency and intensity of chewing and the individual’s jaw strength.

Inspect the SolaBite regularly for signs of damage or deterioration and replace it at the first sign of wear and tear.
